well... from my very small knowledge i would say research each route and prepare for what you may need. i know theres also a luck factor involved cause whatever encounter you come across is what you are stuck with for that route
although you can make the rules as simple or hard as you want. for example some people put species clause so if they find a species they have like buneary they can find another encounter if they run into buneary first on a second route
