I am a firm believer in rudy knight theory
the full extent I have formed over months, is that the core we see within the knight contains Dess, trapped in a core that has been created to be "darker than dark". Dess one day ran away from home, was led into the shelter by Friend, and encouraged to think of what she wanted and plunge a blade into the earth, and in her frantic state, she does. After a long search, Rudy and Carol being the only ones with access to the bunker discover this dark world and are told by Friend that they know where Dess is, and they can help them bring her back, but that Friend can't do it alone, bestowing upon them a core. Friend tells them that they must bring about the darkest day, and only then will Dess be freed from where she is, and Rudy takes this responsibility, sickening him in the overworld (which keep in mind his hospital stay ONLY STARTED when the game began), but giving him immense power in dark worlds. As has been blowing up on the internet lately, Rudy has mentioned the locations of chapters three and four before they happened, and happens to be the only holiday we don't see interacting with Kris directly (aside from Dess).
the dialogue hidden in the code of every chapter, is dess within this core, lost indefinitely, as her father gets sicker while pushing to bring her back, with her mother keeping the image of normalcy up, with kris tying it all together.
